It was Dave’s 7th year as Chair and this is the 11th AGM./EGM

2015 was an interesting year for the Committee

We also had the issues with the supposedly new TIC but there is good news at the Tourism meeting on Monday that we have now got a VIC Visitors information Centre which is to be back at the Pavilion and has been endorsed by the Council
Phil Say is happy to be offering this service and we will fully support him in this

The Pavilion is doing extremely well under the management of Phil Say and his staff which is great news

The BID – is beginning to show some progress and we are keeping a watching brief

Market Flyers – ongoing issues

Sand/Litter in general around the resort

Il Porto meal for members – we are looking into possible venues for this year, possibly The Pavilion

Bowling nights – Next due 30th April, to be held in Dave’s honour

Carnival donation is awaiting the definite go ahead of the aforesaid and we need to decide whether to donate more to this or split the allotted amount with maybe the Motor Cross event

Leases – Mustoe Shorter have been looking into some of the leases with members

Council – some of the Committee had a meeting with Stuart Longbottom who was temporarily with the Council and some concerns were raised about his proposals for the future

WHGLA  Chairpersons Report 2012

It was my fourth year as Chair and this is the 8th AGM.

2011/12 has been a transitional period for the Association and due to the influx of keen Committee members we were able to do things that we had been hoping and trying to do for some time previous but resources did not allow.

We have had a logo designed and produced which most of you now display proudly in your establishments – I have some here if you don’t have one!

We have a dedicated website which we have a lot to thank Jim for with his hard work who was supported by the sub-committee set up immediately after last year’s AGM. This site has had 20,000 hits and we have only just begun. Check it out www.whgla.org.uk THANKS JIM!

We have been keeping a closer eye on planning through Sue and have been able to attend more meetings which have an effect on our businesses, Weymouth, and, trade as a whole. Thank you to all of the Committee who have attended such and fed back – you may have seen info on the website from such meetings.

We have continued to get good press coverage for the Association and built on our name awareness again featuring on; BBC South 3 or 4 times, ITV Westcountry twice, and BBC Solent (2 live interviews), regularly contributed to the Dorset Echo, and also the BBC website. As stated last year when carrying out such duties it is very important to say/do things carefully as with the web and alike the message goes far beyond Weymouth and Dorset and can have a major effect on trade and visitors coming here.

We assisted Waterloo Place residents in getting the Council to vary deeds so that they could arrange their own redecoration and save hundreds of pounds. Devonshire Buildings are now following this precedent set.

We have continued our dialogue with the Council on issues such as Condor Ferry, Pavilion, Tourism Trade as a whole, Roadwork’s/Traffic, TIC, Brewers Quay, Greenhill Gardens, Dog mess/litter, Public toilets, Parking, Olympics 2012, and of course Lease/rent issues (ongoing).

We have spoken with Bookers to see what their plans are for the Olympics and asked you guys for your input and thoughts – they are looking at opening 6am-12midnight 7 days a week for the 1 week prior to the Olympics and the 2 of the Olympics.

We appointed a Social secretary Alison who arranged the Ming Wah lunch to which Chris Hook came and addressed people, and 2 ten pin bowling nights which were great nights – THANK YOU ALISON. She plans to sort out a race night and a Christmas do soon. BUT when she tried to do this for December 2011 only a handful of people replied so it’s up to you.

We are here for you; to give you a voice, offer help and advice, financially support in dispute (if involved from the start and open and honest with us), contact people on members behalf and in Associations name, share experiences and problems, share good and bad tradesman, help new owners and industry people.

THANKS – go to the whole committee for their hard work and support over the last 12 months especially Linda as Secretary who is stepping down due to family commitments out of town. Also thanks to Treasurer Denise who is stepping down as Treasurer due to imminent sale.

Finally, let’s work together and share together more – it’s our strength.

QUESTIONS….

In addition I spoke about the local elections urging people to vote even though I did not feel that any of the current crop in Melcombe Regis were doing a good job. At this point Pete Farrell was welcomed up to talk to attendees.

WHGLA  Chairpersons Report 2011 – Issued July 6th 2011

It was my third year as Chair and from the constitution it would appear that this is the 7th AGM.

Over the last 12 months we have built name awareness featuring on; BBC South, ITV Westcountry, regularly contributed to the Dorset Echo, and also the Western Gazette.  Whilst doing so it is very important to state that we/I have to be very careful in what is said and thus reported as it can have a major effect on trade and visitors coming here.

We had a major meeting with the Council which members were invited to attend (and some did), and areas we covered were;

Pavilion, Tourism Trade as a whole, Roadwork’s/Traffic, Sailing Academy, TIC, Brewers Quay, Greenhill Gardens, Dog mess/litter, Public toilets, Parking, Olympics 2012, Waterloo Place redecoration (which is setting a precedent for other areas), Trees cut by Alexandra Gardens, Lease/rent issues (ongoing).

I have been a Staff Union Chair person before so I know the need to chip away at issues and that we are not always going to get what we want, BUT we have to be honest and if the answer to member’s questions is no we will say so.

What have you done? – read minutes? replied to requests for info? Supplied info? – only one person emailed regarding request for info on Traffic etc. for ITV West Country.

Some people are regular contributors – Stuart @ Gresham, Jeff @ Langham, previous owner of Sandscombe, Denise Groves (Aaran House), and Arcadia.

We are not and don’t wish to be a Social Club, we are more professional than that.  We are open and honest sharing everything with members and keeping sensitive and confidential info. As such when required.

We do try and organise Socials although members have not been forthcoming with ideas and therefore we have proposed a Social Secretary role for 2011/12 which Alison Weller has agreed to stand for with a view to arranging a Social event every quarter.

We are here for you; to give you a voice, offer help and advice, financially support in dispute (if involved from the start and open and honest with us), contact people on members behalf and in Associations name, share experiences and problems, share good and bad tradesman, help new owners and industry people.

WE should have a representative at most if not all local meetings and every public council meeting however having only 5 Committee Members has made this impossible.  Feedback should then be given to Committee and then members alike.

BUT why do I do it?  Obviously I have a business in the industry, live in area, care for future of Weymouth and Industry alike.

SO.. I was very disappointed at an email that went out with unthought out ideas and given that a cry for more Committee members has gone out every month.  The professional, open, and honest thing to do would have been to join us and then see what the Committee and Association is about and then made any proposals to the Committee for discussion members in full here today.  Instead people have seemingly been slating what we do and even saying that the Association does not exist in its current form – completely misleading and untrue.

I know that this will be discussed in detail more later but felt I had to take this opportunity to let you know my feelings in my report.

THANKS – go to the whole committee for their hardwork and support over the last 12 months especially Linda as Secretary.

Finally, let’s work together and share together more – it’s our strength.
